A Happy Mother’s Day

Uncategorized

I first want to start this post by saying Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers, angel baby moms, step moms, grandmothers and those mamas up above. It’s one helluva job and it takes a strong women to do what we do! I hope you were all spoiled with love and maybe a little bit of alone time haha!

Although I didn’t get to spend the day with my own mom, I got to take my daughter to the Happy Place Museum in LA with one of my best friends, Taylor! The Happy Place is a pop up museum located on the roof of LA Live. It’s full of fun, colorful rooms and music that just makes you wanna sing & dance your way through! Here’s a little peek of what’s inside…

Tulum, Mexico

Categories, Food + Drink, Travel, Uncategorized

If you’re like me, you probably have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to places you want to visit, see and explore. The past couple months, Tulum kept popping up and I immediately put it on the top of my list. Tulum is a very small town in the state of Quintana Too in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is roughly two hours south of Cancun and is quickly becoming the tourist destination and every bloggers dream, with the Caribbean blue waters, use greenery and delicious food…basically paradise. Plus, there is very little service there so its easy to actually relax and get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I started researching and figuring out when the best time to visit was and it turned out, NOW is the best time to go, before it gets too hot to even go to the beach and when the tourist season is starting to settle down so its not super busy. I told my boyfriend Aaron and just like that, we booked our tickets and were headed to Mexico! We spent four nights in downtown Tulum, about 20 minutes away from the beach and it was absolutely perfect!

We took a red eye on Sunday night so we would get there early Monday morning and wouldn’t have to miss an extra day of our vacation due to travel. We ended up landing around 6:30 a.m. Tulum time (they are 2 hours ahead of us) and it was an hour and a half shuttle ride to our hotel from the Cancun Airport. Perfect timing for breakfast at the XscapeTulum Hotel restaurant, where we were staying and a dip in the pool while we waited for our room.

The rest of the first day, we literally just slept all day long until dinner. I was exhausted from working so much running on very little sleep and then traveling on top of that! But hey, thats what a vacation is for, sleeping in as much as you want and doing things on your own time, right? We did eat at a really good place down the street from us called Burrito Amore. It’s a cute little restaurant with all outside seating and the burritos were muy bien!

The next day of our trip we wanted to get an early start and see the Mayan Ruins before it got too crowded and hot. I recommend getting there when it opens if you can (8 a.m.) We ended getting there a little after 9 and it wasn’t too bad but when we were leaving it was getting busy. It’s about $5 US to get in and you can stay for as long as you want! They offer tours (in all languages) but I personally don’t think its totally necessary.

There is also stairs down to the beach if you get hot you can take a dip so bring a suit just in case!

Once we were done we thought it was a good idea to cool off and check out a cenote. There are tons of cenotes around Tulum but we wanted something more secluded like Cenote Cristal Escondido, which is actually two cenotes-one Cristal and the other one Escondido, that are connected through an underwater tunnel like a lot of the others. We decided to start with Escondido and it did not disappoint! It was absolutely beautiful with so much greenery surrounding this pool of water so clear you can see all the little fish and rocks below you which makes it more comforting getting in knowing was below haha! It even had a little deck you can jump off! Escondido ended up being so nice we didn’t even go to Cristal, we just hung out there for a couple hours until we both agreed it was time for a drink. Plus, the nice part about going to Cristal Escondido was how close it was to our hotel, its located about 5 minutes south outside of the downtown area!

One of the places that would always come up when I was looking for places to go in Tulum was COCO Tulum’s bar so of course we had to go. There me and Aaron sat on swings, drinking, eating and watching the waves.

On our way back we wanted to walk so we can see some of the other resorts and shops, and we stumbled upon this restaurant called El Pez and had a drink. Seriously guys, out of all the drinks from the trip, “Dear Mr. Donald Trump” was hands down my favorite…so good even Aaron agrees!

Speaking of good restaurants, you have to go to The Real Coconut for breakfast it is an absolute must! There food is all gluten, grain, dairy and refined sugar free…can I get an amen! The plantain pancakes are highly recommended along with the iced dirty chai. The ambiance of the place is so spot on too, with the airy atmosphere, comfortable inside/ outside seating and friendly service.

It was so good me and Aaron ended up eating there two days in a row! Its located in the Sanara hotel which offers yoga classes with an amazing view of the ocean so one of the mornings I took a class while Aaron got to get some work done then had breakfast together, it was perfect!

It wasn’t until a couple days of us being there that we realized we never actually hung out at the beach so we dedicated the rest of Wednesday to nothing but laying out and playing in the water. We went with Be Tulum Hotel, which asks you to spend at least 800 pesos a person to use the beach club but you can use that towards food and drinks which wasn’t going to be a problem. The service was amazing, we got to lay on this comfortable day bed and had waiters take our order or put or drinks on ice while we went for a swim!

IMG_8364IMG_8379IMG_8341IMG_8437IMG_8502IMG_8448IMG_8352

We ended up perusing some of the shops on our way back and stopped at Matcha Mama so I could get a little sweet tooth acai bowl fix because I just couldn’t resist, plus those swinging seats get me every time…

IMG_8522IMG_8676IMG_8515

We thought, why stop the eating there? Let’s go to Bejuco for dinner! Which our taxi driver, Freddie informed us it is pronounced Ba-Who-Co meaning vine in Spanish which makes a lot of sense because the restaurant looks like this…

IMG_8272IMG_8274IMG_8683IMG_8690IMG_8682IMG_8723IMG_8726

Across and a little down the street from Bajuco, there is a restaurant/bar named MaTeaos which me and Aaron ended up at a couple nights after diner for some live music and well TEQUILA! Its all outside under a covered top and every time we went it was busy with lots of other tourists!

IMG_8733

Our last full day in Tulum we wanted to just relax so we just cruised down to the beach and figured we would try out another beach club at the Alma Hotel. It was okay, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The service was very slow and didn’t provide towels or even a straw for my drink…like what? Other than that, the hotel was pretty cute, comfy beach chairs and fun little hammocks.

We ended our trip with such am amazing dinner at the Nomade Hotel. The entire place was a dream, I want to move in! The ambiance in the entire place was just magic and the food was the best meal we had there! We got the Calamari to start and both ordered the salmon for our main course, both are highly recommended!

And thats our trip to Tulum, Mexico! It was so beautiful was a much needed relaxing getaway for me and man. We already cannot wait to go back!

HELPFUL TIPS

  • Since there are no direct flights straight to Tulum, you will land in Cancun and need a shuttle or other means of transportation. I recommend Happy Shuttle.
  • Get pesos right when you get there, there is a currency exchange place in the airport after you get your bags or exchange it before you leave for your trip. The ATMs will charge an exchange fee as well as the banks, plus you don’t want to have to be getting money out from the ATM all the time.
  • Do not drink the water! Only drink water bottles (or beer)!
  • No need to rent a car since most places are biking distance from each other. Hotels usually have some to rent or are complimentary to use. Since our hotel was about 15-20 mins from the ruins/beaches, biking was going to be too far so we took taxis and it wasn’t expensive. I think the most we paid for a ride in U.S. dollars was about 10 at the most. Also, if you do go with taking taxis I recommend Freddy Damas. He was so great! He speaks pretty good english and is super friendly with lots of great recommendations about where to eat and where to go/do in Tulum. He gave us his card so we can schedule a taxi pick up from him which made it super convenient! The best way to reach him is through email at damasriverafredi@gmail.com!
  • January-March is when Tulum gets the biggest wave of tourism so go near the end but before it gets too hot or wait until October-December when hurricane season is over and the weather is warm.
  • Four days in a good amount of time to stay in Tulum. Next time, I don’t think we will even need to go for that long since we crossed off almost everything on our to-do wish list!
  • As for bringing kids to Mexico, everywhere is pretty kid friendly but we only saw a handful of kids the whole time we were there and they were in our hotel. If you stay at one of the resorts on the beach side then you wont really need to leave since the beach and the pool are right there.
  • Try and make friends with your taxi driver, talk to them about what they recommend in Tulum, usually they know enough English to have a conversation and are really fun to talk to! If they don’t know where you want to go, we found it was the easiest to communicate where we wanted to go through a pictures on a phone or showing them the spelling.

Gorjana

Cloth + Style, Uncategorized

Is it just me or is the worst when you leave the house and realize that you forgot to put on your jewelry and you feel naked the rest of the day? Or you don’t notice it until you go to try and take a cute picture of your coffee with your hand casually holding the mug, you know to add the right aesthetic and make it insta worthy, except you don’t have any cute rings or bracelets on (eeek)?  Come on, I know i’m not the only one…right guys?…guys?

Alright moving on…I’m totally the kind of person that needs to be wearing some sort of ring all the time or else I feel like i’m missing something but i’m also not a huge statement piece person when it comes to rings either. And if you’re anything like me, who believes there is beauty in simplicity, then these stacking rings from Gorjana are perfect for you. You can stack them, wear one on each finger, only wear one at a time if you so please, your call. Thats the beauty of it, they are so delicate and simple, no matter how you wear them they will look effortlessly stylish and can be dressed up or down for any occasion. For example, you will normally find me in some sort of graphic tee with a pair of mom jeans and the rings on my fingers, still lookin’ just as good if I wear wearing a dress and heels.

Also, can we just talk about layering necklaces for a second? Okay, cool. Gorjana’s selection of necklaces is so versatile, you can layer whatever you want and can’t really go wrong! I especially love the Chloe Double Pendant i’m wearing on the bottom layer because its not only super cute but it’s adjustable and who doesn’t love options, amiright ladies?? You can make it as high or low as you want, changing your look with a simple pull on the chain!

Excited over Sleep

Uncategorized

Has anyone else noticed that the older you get, the more your interests and habits change in ways you never thought they would? Like I’m talking about things your parents would do and think ‘thats not going to be me when I’m older’. Well, it is and the best part about it, you’re going to actually like it!

I’m not sure when exactly it started, but over time I started to realize that the things I do and care about now aren’t things I would really think too much about 5 years ago. For example I love my night time routine, if I don’t do it then I don’t sleep as good and thats going to throw me off for the next day and nobody likes to have an off day, amiright? My skincare routine is something that has changed drastically over the past probably six months or so and let me just tell you…game changer! I absolutely love taking good care of my skin first thing in the morning when I wake up and it’s the last thing I do before bed, it makes me feel so fresh and it’s such a confidence boost when your skin is clear and hydrated. But guys, I’m not just talking about going to bed early and getting enough sleep at night but even things you do for fun are a little different now!

At least for me, goings out for casual drinks for happy hour with some girlfriends sounds way more fun instead of get hammered at the bar with a bunch of other hammered people shouting over the DJ to talk to one another. Don’t get me wrong, every once in a while you gotta let loose and have those kinds of nights, but personally I’m so busy that when I do get some time to catch up with friends, I want to actually talk to them, find out whats going on in their lives and have meaningful conversations. And if we are being totally honest, if I have a night off I would rather stay in, light some candles and read a book or  watch a show like This Is Us or something about living in tiny homes wearing my robe. with slippers. after a bath. maybe with some tea…or wine (depending on the day) and go to bed at a reasonable hour. I know, I know, I get prettttty wild. For real though, these are the things that I actually enjoy doing now!

Another thing I’ve noticed, is that my spending habits have changed as well. I mean the things I pay for now are obviously different then what they were in high school because I didn’t have a kid then, but besides all the tiny little shoes and preschool tuition I have to pay for, investing money for trips I want to take, essentials and products that are better for our bodies and environment are more important to me then buying things just to have. Going back to my skin care, I have come to realize that paying a little more for good products with only good ingredients, without all the chemicals makes such a difference and is so worth it. Clothes are big for me too. It has become so hard for me to spend money somewhere like forever21 on something so ridiculous that will give me very little satisfaction over something that is ethically made and gives back to the artisan or community. I could go on and on about this topic but I think it deserves it’s own post so I’ll just tell you my new rule when I’m shopping…if I don’t absolutely love it and won’t wear it more than 30 times, I am not going to get it. Trust me, just this rule alone has stopped me so many times and really makes you more aware of your purchases. Try it out and see if it works for you!

Change is inevitable. As much as people can try to fight it, it happens and it’s not always a bad thing. Our habits, ambitions, desires all shift as time goes on and personally, I welcome all the new that comes with the ebb and flow of life. So if you don’t like to spend your weekend raging until 2a.m. every night and would rather be binge watching the new season of New Girl on Netflix, all I have to say is own it, accept it, do you (but don’t forget its okay to rage too)!
